The role of the mediator is to reduce obstacles to communication, assist in the identification of issues, explore alternatives, and otherwise facilitate voluntary agreements that resolve a dispute. The ultimate decision-making authority in mediation always rests solely with the parties. In Florida, virtually all civil disputes are subject to mediation through the court system. In many instances, Mediation can settle a dispute without the need to proceed to trial.

Participating in mediation is required by courts prior to the time that a trial takes place. The majority of cases settle during mediation and therefore, a trial becomes unnecessary.
It is a new alternative dispute resolution process in which a qualified impartial professional assists separated or divorced parents to resolve issues pertaining to their parenting plan and to help them implement their parenting plan. This can include: identifying disputed issues; reducing misunderstandings; clarifying priorities; exploring possibilities for problem solving; developing methods of collaboration in parenting; developing a parenting plan; and aiding parties in complying with the court's order regarding parenting issues. Parenting Coordination helps the parents avoid repeated trips to court over parenting issues. The Parenting Coordinator will work with others involved with the family, including mental health experts, health care personnel, social services, education and legal professionals, as well as extended family, stepparents and the children. The Parenting Coordinator may make recommendations for outside services, such as counseling, that the Parenting Coordinator may determine are needed.
FEES FOR PARENTING COORDINATION Fees and retainer amount for parenting coordination will vary depending on the case. The range and scale of fees is generally between $100-$200 per hour. The parents may come to an agreement upon the costs or the court shall determine the allocation of fees and costs for parenting coordination between the parties.
